How to Make a Tequila Sunrise

The most famous tequila cocktail of all time, the Tequila Sunrise is adored worldwide for its fresh fruity flavours and picture-perfect appearance.

This stunning mix was invented in Sausalito, California in the early 1970s and shot to stardom following endorsements by rock legends like The Rolling Stones and The Eagles. The Tequila Sunrise has remained one of the most iconic 70s cocktails thanks to its California skyline aesthetic and undeniably groovy taste.

Making your own Tequila Sunrise really couldn’t be easier. It holds just three simple ingredients: tequila, orange juice, and grenadine. Blanco Tequila (also known as ‘silver’ tequila) is the best spirit to go for when making cocktails as it has a subtle flavour that won’t overpower your drink. These bottles from Jose CuervoCazcabel, and Ocho are great for mixing.

Grenadine is perhaps the most important aspect of creating a Tequila Sunrise as it provides that classic summery ombre effect. It is the last ingredient you’ll add to your cocktail, but due to the density of the liquid it will sink to the bottom of the glass and create a distinct colour-blocked serve. Just remember – don’t mix your drink if you want it to look like a Sunrise!
