The Second Red Rose is an exciting 2021 release from The Balvenie Stories range, aged for twenty-one years and finished in Australian Shiraz casks to yield a sweet, fruit-forward palate and distinctive blushed hue.
Released in 2021 as part of the esteemed Balvenie Stories collection, The Second Red Rose is a twenty-one year old single malt with a sweet, romantic palate inspired by legends of an exceptionally charming flower.
The story of the rose follows the Fair Maid of Galloway, a widow named Margaret Douglas who implored King James II to let her continue living in Balvenie Castle following the death of her husband. The King agreed under one condition: that she pay rent each year in the form of a single rare red rose which exclusively grew on her Speyside Estate.
The Balvenie was inspired to create a whisky in celebration of this tale, crafting The Second Red Rose as a fruitier expression of their signature single malt.
It is aged for 21 years in traditional American and European Oak barrels before finishing in casks seasoned with Australian Shiraz, imparting notes of bruised blackberry, ripe peach, sweet oak and subtle warming spice, all held within a smooth body which bears a distinctive blushed hue.
Perfect Serve – The Second Red Rose is best appreciated served neat and, thanks to its distinctive finish, is sweet and supple enough to be drunk alone even by those who typically prefer ice or a splash of water.
