October Cocktail of the Month: Bloody Mary

We can’t promise that if you have three of these, an apparition won’t appear in the mirror, but we can guarantee that your desire for the perfect Halloween cocktail to quench your thirst will be thoroughly satiated.

Origins

Born thanks to the Russian Revolution; around 1920, émigrés escaping to Paris brought with them their most prized possessions: vodka and caviar. Bartender, Ferdinand “Pete” Petiot, from Harry’s New York Bar at 5 Rue Danou began experimenting with the new spirit, which he found tasteless. At the same time, Petiot was introduced to American canned tomato juice, which backs in the dark days of Prohibition.

Over a year, Petiot made vodka drink after vodka drink until he mixed it with the tomato juice and some seasonings, and the Bloody Mary was created. The drink was extremely popular with Americans, so in 1933, Vincent Astor brought over Petiot to man the King Cole Bar at the St. Régis Hotel in New York. The drink became the next-best thing since sliced bread and was particularly known as a supposed cure for hangovers.

Ingredients:

  • large handful of ice
  • 100ml Ghost vodka
  • 500ml tomato juice
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice, plus 2 slices to serve
  • few shakes Worcestershire sauce
  • few shakes Tabasco (smoked Tabasco is nice)
  • pinch celery salt
  • pinch black pepper
  • 2 celery sticks, to serve

Method:

  • Place the ice in a large jug. Measure the vodka, tomato juice and lemon juice and pour it straight onto the ice.
  • Add 3 shakes of Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco (or more if you like it very spicy) and a pinch of celery salt and pepper. Stir until the outside of the jug feels cold, then strain the cocktail into 2 tall glasses.
  • Top up with fresh ice, add a celery stick and lemon slice to both glasses and enjoy!
