Childish Gambino – 3.15. 20
The man that brought us “This is America”, “3005”, “Sweatpants” and “Bonfire” is finally hanging up the microphone and the Childish Gambino persona. The “This is America” music video is just one of the many thought provoking and outlandish music videos he’s given us over the years, and its saddening that Donald Glover will be releasing his last ever Childish Gambino album ever. Childish Gambino had absolutely no guests for his Coachella appearance in 2019, simply because his presence takes over where he is. This makes perfect sense, Donald Glover is great actor with stand-out performances on Guava Island and Community, but we will certainly treasure the final appearance of Childish Gambino.
PartyNextDoor – Club Atlantis
The underrated Canadian singer, ghost writer and producer working at the underbelly of Drake’s label OVO records is simply too talented to stay so quiet. The influence of “PARTYNEXTDOOR TWO” (P2) on the R&B Music scene is undeniable, despite fact that music critics couldn’t recognise his genius at the time. You can argue he is one of the most important R&B producers of the decade, helping to birth the styles that Tory Lanez, 6lack and Ty Dolla Sign would later emerge with. “Break from Toronto” and “Recognise” were game changing records, and it will be interesting to see PartyNextDoor’s 2020 release “Club Atlantis” provides us with now that Drake has finally unleashed OVO’s greatest weapon.
Wiley – Godfather 3
“Everyone drop your album on the 1st and the UK Scene will be built in a day” Earlier in the year, the Godfather of Grime himself made this statement. Eskiboy has given us hits such as “Heatwave” and “Wearing My Rolex”, classic grime albums such as “Treddin on Thin Ice” and even one of the best grime albums of all time in the form of “Playtime’s over”. Recently, he’s been a part of a fair share of controversy, Wiley’s beef with Skepta and Ed Sheeran at times leads you to suspect he’s having a middle life crisis. Wiley has boldly stated his thoughts on the question “Is Grime Dead?”, whilst ironically releasing Commercial dancehall and Afro-Swing tracks such as “Givenchy Bag” and “Boasty” with Future, Idris Elba and Sean Paul. Godfather 3 could be the album that reignites grime and cannot be missed.
Alicia Keys – A.L.I.C.I.A
90s babies and old-school R&B heads rejoice as Alicia Keys is releasing new music in 2020. Alicia Keys’ “No One” is THE R&B classic of the 2000s and “My Boo” is one of the best R&B duets of all time, alongside Chris Brown’s “No Air” and Lauryn Hill’s “Nothing Even Matters”. Her legacy is untouchable and the fact that a 2020 Alicia Keys album is actually happening is exciting for any 90s baby. Although we have the singles “Time Machine” and “Show Me Love” featuring 21 Savage and Miguel, the very concept of new music from Alicia Keys brings joy that cannot be contained. Alicia Keys might add another Grammy Award to add to her collection.
The Weeknd – Chapter 6
The Weeknd’s music is so addictive that leaving us for an entire year without a project is just unacceptable. The Weeknd’s unique voice was on every radio station when “The Hills” was released ahead of his project “Beauty Behind the Madness”. He might have cut his hair, but the Weeknd’s creativity and vocal ability was very much intact, and “Starboy” proved that. “My Dear Melancholy” dropped in 2018, and whilst he did release singles such as “Blinding Lights” and “Heartless”, the Canadian R&B singer is really leaving is laying in wait eagerly for this next project. When the Weeknd Headlined Coachella 2018, his performance was breath-taking, and another album means we’ll get many more brilliant live performances that take you on an emotional rollercoaster. However, do not get your hopes up, the much discussed Weeknd track “Like Selena”, which supposedly addresses the Weeknd’s relationship with Selena Gomez, won’t be on it.
J Cole – The Fall Off
Mura Masa – RYC (Raw Youth College)
Kid Cudi – Entergalactic
Moses Boyd – Dark Matter
