Introducing Eminente Reserva Rum, Our Product of the Month

Eminente Reserva is a Cuban aged rum set to transform the way you experience rum thanks to a rare marriage of tradition and modern spirit.

One of very few rums to be awarded prestigious ‘Denominación de Origen Protegida’ (D.O.P.) status, Eminente reaches the heights of quality and authenticity found in the best Cuban rums.

It is crafted by Cuba’s youngest and most influential Maestros Roneros, César Martí, whose remarkable craftsmanship and experimental edge marks a new dawn for his homeland’s native drink.

Eminente Reserva is composed of 70% aged aguardientes, an intensely flavourful molasses distillate similar to the rich sugarcane eaux-de-vie which first established Cuba as the heart of rum production in the 19th century. With this being the highest proportion of aguardientes ever used to make a Cuban rum, Eminente stands as a shining ode to both tradition and innovation.

Eminente Reserva

A Central Cuban Rum, Aged 7 Years

Cuban rums generally fall into two categories: Western ‘Occidente’ rums with a potent, dry palate ideal for cocktail-making, and Eastern ‘Oriente’ rums which are smoother, sweeter, and perfect for sipping.

Eminente Reserva is instead fashioned in the Central style, combining both qualities to create a deeply versatile spirit. Whether you’re keen to enjoy it as a sipping rum or mix it into a premium cocktail, here are some of the best ways to serve Eminente Reserva Rum.

How to Drink Eminente Reserva as a Sipping Rum

Not every rum was made for sipping, but Eminente carries a smoothness and sophistication that deserves to be appreciated as a stand-alone experience.

If you want to really explore the character of Eminente, it’s best to serve it without ice so that it remains undiluted. Alternatively, pouring Eminente over a single large ice cube can mellow the liquor to create a softer sip for casual enjoyment.

Eminente On the Rocks

Smell

To begin, take a deep sniff of Eminente Reserva. You can expect to be met with a rich nose of roasted espresso and dusty cocoa that mellows into sweet fusions of caramel and cream.

Taste

Next, take a slow sip of Eminente. Seven years of ageing in ex-whisky barrels makes this rum impressively full-bodied and complex with distinct layers of flavour to discover.

Its palate is expertly balanced between light and dark notes, moving from creamy sugarcane and vanilla to coffee, tobacco, and Sichuan pepper.

Finish

Finally, savour the finish of Eminente: lengthy and rich with hints of crystallised ginger, prune, and a final smoky edge.

Eminente Reserva Cuban Rum Cocktails

Cuban Old Fashioned

Cuban Old Fashioned Cocktail

An Old Fashioned is a true classic among whisky cocktails, but it’s always worth mixing things up with a hearty dash of rum and some uplifting citrus bitters to create a sweet, tropical serve.

A Cuban Old Fashioned can be a little too stiff for some, so make sure you use plenty of ice if you prefer less heat.

  • 60ml Eminente Reserva Rum
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 1 dash grapefruit cocktail bitters
  • 1 dash orange cocktail bitters
  • 1 orange, to garnish

Add the rum, sugar, and bitters to a mixing glass and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Add ice to the glass and stir for another 30 seconds. Sample the cocktail and, if it is too strong, continue stirring until the ice dilutes the mix to your desired tastes.

Strain the drink into a tumbler with a large ice cube. Peel the orange and cut a large rectangular strip from the rind. Firmly squeeze the strip to ‘express’ the oils from the skin and gently pass it around the rim of the glass to add an aromatic touch to your cocktail. Twist the peel into a spiral and add as a garnish.

Hemingway Daiquiri

Hemingway Daiquiri Cocktail

A delicious twist on the original Daiquiri inspired by author Ernest Hemingway’s intense love for the cocktail while living in Cuba.

Eminente is the perfect rum for this popular mix, with its smooth palate of sugar and spice blending wonderfully with tart fruit juices and sumptuous cherry liqueur.

Simply shake all ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker, strain into a chilled cocktail glass, and garnish with a maraschino cherry.

Old Cuban

Old Cuban Cocktail

The ultimate cocktail for a night of celebration, an Old Cuban mixes dark aged rum with a splash of champagne for a sip that’s just as refreshing as it is luxurious.

To a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice, add all ingredients except the champagne. Shake thoroughly, strain into a chilled coupe glass, and top off with a generous dash of bubbly.

El Presidente

El Presidente Cocktail

Created in honour of Cuba’s 3rd President, Mario García Menocal, this cocktail was extremely popular following its invention in the early 20th century. Though it soon slipped into obscurity, the El Presidente was thankfully rediscovered by drinks historians and is now widely enjoyed as an exotic, characterful twist on a martini.

Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice and pour in all the ingredients. Shake until cold and strain into a cocktail glass.

Mojito

Dark Rum Mojito Cocktail

Probably the most famous cocktail on this list, you simply can’t go wrong with a Mojito. This serve is traditionally made with a neutral white rum but is brilliantly transformed by swapping in a shot of Eminente Reserva.

A dark rum mojito is still light and refreshing thanks to the lime and mint yet has an added punch of smoky caramel flavour and a velvety smooth finish.

Cut the lime into small wedges and add squeeze its juices into a glass. Tear the mint leaves to release their oils before adding to the glass along with sugar. Mix these ingredients together until the sugar dissolves.

Pour over the Eminente Reserva and stir again. Add several ice cubes, top up with soda water, and garnish with a lime wedge.
