Bourbon Heritage Month, a month declared in 2007 by the US Senate. September celebrates all things bourbon from the whisky to the history and this month, VIP Bottles wants to celebrate with you.
So, pour yourself a glass of your favourite bourbon and let us give you some facts, suggestions and information about Bourbon Heritage Month.
Founded in the 1700s, Bourbon quickly became not only America’s but also the world’s most favourite drink. From Kentucky, the whisky type has touched the world with its distinctive taste through brands such as Jack Daniels and Wild Turkey and still to this day, 95% of all Bourbon production is in the state of Kentucky.
Branded as America’s Native Spirit in 2004, Bourbon has rules similar to that of champagne about how it can be made and branded as Bourbon.
Rule number one –
Bourbon must be created from a mash (a mixture of fermentable grain) that is at least 51% corn. The other 49% is usually a mixture of barley, rye, or wheat.
Rule number two –
It must be aged in new American oak barrels (whereas many types of whisky, like Scotch whisky, are often aged in barrels that have previously held wine, port, other whiskies etc).
Rule number three –
Bourbon has to into the barrel at no more than 125 proof and it cannot enter the bottle at anything less than 80 proof.
Rule number four –
Finally, for it to be bourbon, nothing but water can be added, and that is only at the end to prove the whiskey down to what the distiller is seeking (in comparison to Scotch, where caramel colouring is a common addition).
In addition to these rules, Bourbon can be aged for as little as a few months to a few years, there is no ageing requirement for bourbon as long as it has spent at least a day in a barrel.
If you are new to the world of Bourbon, VIP has you covered, not only with bottles but also with how to drink Bourbon.
Connoisseurs of Bourbon would most likely drink it neat. This means a shot in a whisky glass with a couple of ice cubes thrown in to cool it down. Drank neat, you can really get a flavour of the bourbon, appreciating its tastes, aromas and its colour
Due to its texture and taste, Bourbon also tastes great in cocktails. The bourbon cocktail is sophisticated, strong, and powerful with flavour. Any brand of Bourbon can be used for a cocktail why not try the Manhattan? It’s easy!
- 50ml Bourbon
- 25ml Rosso vermouth
- 5ml syrup from a jar of maraschino cherries (we used Luxardo)
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- Add all the ingredients into a mixing glass with ice and stir well.
- Strain into a chilled glass, preferably a coupe glass
- Garnish with a maraschino cherry
That’s it! The Manhattan cocktail tastes sweet and looks extremely classy.
Finally, why not mix it with a soft drink? Jack Daniels will say don’t mix it with cola, but here at VIP, we approve. It also tastes great with two cubs of ice and ginger ale!
